Interior design is a growing industry where it gives an artist an opportunity to transform and beautify a range of spaces from homes to hotels.  

Step 1: Get a Degree

To become an interior designer, you need to be educated on how to conceptualize and learn the technicalities of design structure of spaces, make floor plans, choose furnishings, and create color schemes.

The main way people become interior designers is by entering a program to earn a bachelor's degree in interior design or an architecture degree.

With a degree you will learn design styles, arrangement of furniture, and color theory.

Make sure to obtain your degree from an accredited institution.

Also, many of the programs will offer internship opportunities which will be essential experience for your career.

      

Step 2: Take And Pass The Exam

Once you graduate, you must take and pass the national council for interior design qualification exam.

Now, not all states require that you are licensed but many of them do.

If you do not have a license, many of these states will prohibit you from interior designing in commercial spaces.

Make sure to research the requirements of the states that you are interested in working in.

Step 3: Gain Experience

After your graduate and become licensed make sure to look for opportunities to gain experience and build your portfolio.

Offer to design spaces for free to your family and friends and hopefully as you begin to build your repertoire you may get referrals for and then you can land your first paying client!

Step 4: Believe in yourself

When you embark on a new venture it common to have a imposter syndrome. If you want to succeed as an interior designer you need to believe in talent and trust your decision making. This is a creative field where there aren't any right or wrong answers. So put your best foot forward and stay confident it in your skills.
